The Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum, located at 78 Tarraville Road in the historic coastal town of Port Albert, offers a rich exploration of Victoria's earliest maritime history. Housed inside the beautifully preserved 1862 Bank of Victoria building—which once held weekly shipments of gold bullion from regional strikes like Omeo and Walhalla—the museum captures the area's deep history, spanning from its Gunaikurnai traditional origins to the arrival of European settlers in 1841. Inside, visitors are met with immersive displays detailing the tragic 1841 wreck of the paddle steamer Clonmel, a spectacular sound and light show in "Shipwreck Alley," and rare artifacts including an intact 1871 Breeches Buoy Rocket Lifesaving system. The collection seamlessly blends indoor historical exhibits with outdoor maritime treasures, featuring restored workboats, the original Port Albert wharf crane, and the historic Citadel Island automatic light.

  • Navigation & Communication: Traces technology from hand-held sextants to satellite systems, including an interactive, push-button 1952 coastal radio base station.
