Wonyip Public Hall

Perched high in the Strzelecki Ranges with sweeping views stretching toward Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory, the Wonyip Public Hall (historically known as the Wonyip Excelsior Hall) stands as a proud, enduring symbol of its hilltop community.

As one of the final remaining historic touchpoints of the original Wonyip settlement, this beloved hall has a resilient and versatile history that mirrors the changing landscape of South Gippsland.

Originally erected by local residents in 1902, the hall quickly became the beating heart of the district. Its early years were defined by true multi-purpose utility:

• The Local School: Leased to the Education Department, it functioned as Wonyip State School No. 3410. A front room was even used as quarters for the schoolteacher.
• The Free Library: By 1907, the hall housed a humble Free Library, boasting a collection of 76 books open to locals in the late afternoons.
• Community & Entertainment: On weekends and evenings, it transformed to host traveling entertainment companies, church services, local concerts, and lively country dances.

Maintained by a passionate, dedicated Committee of Management, the Wonyip Public Hall remains a vital link to the area's hardworking pioneering past while continuing to welcome new generations to this scenic pocket of Gippsland.
