RUBEENA CRUISE
Drift back into a different time, when our waterways were our highways, and journey from the Port of Sale to the landmark Swing Bridge. Spot birds and wildlife as you cruise and your guide recounts the region’s remarkable stories, from its first people the Gunnaikurnai, through early settlement to the present day. The scene is set as you board The Rubeena, a classy wooden boat first launched at Lakes Entrance in 1912.

Where you find water, you find birds and animals and there is a myriad of different species to be
seen along The Rubeena’s route. The Rubeena’s quiet electric motor and leisurely pace are ideal for spotting even the shiest creatures. Birdsong provides a constant soundtrack to your jounrey and keen eyes will spot Whistling Kites, Pelicans, Sea Eagles, Cormorants, Moorhens, and Azure Kingfishers. The abundant birdlife is significant to the region’s first people, the Gunnaikurnai, and a local artist commemorated their creation story of Borun the Pelican and Tuk the Musk Duck in an evocative sculpture set in parkland at the Swing Bridge.

GIPPSLAND ART GALLERY
The Gippsland Art Gallery is situated at the Port of Sale, overlooking stunning waterways and
parkland. Every year the Gallery hosts around twenty exhibitions of local, national and
international significance, in addition to ongoing and evolving displays of the permanent
collection. Housed in the Wellington Centre together with the Sale Library and Sale Visitor Centre,
there is always plenty to see and do!

In July 2015 the Gallery commenced a major, $14.53 million redevelopment. The redevelopment has dramatically enhanced the visitor experience, with increased exhibition spaces and improved access to the Gallery collection. The new Gippsland Art Gallery opened to the public on 6 January 2018. Features of the new Gallery include access to the art reference library, The Dock Cafe, Gallery Shop, and a dedicated showcase for the celebrated Sale-based textile artist Annemieke Mein OAM.
