Just swing off the road as you head south from Sale, a quiet parking spot and one of the best walks, or rides, if bikes are your thing, in the vicinity of Sale.
The Sale Common Wetlands cover approximately 300 hectares, 70% of which is freshwater marsh. The remaining area is covered by red gum woodland and grasslands.
There are two major paths. One a right turn off the main path, heading roughly southeast along the western edge of the wetlands. Another cutting into the wetlands and leading to a long boardwalk that allows you direct access to the diverse birdlife close enough to touch on either side of the promenade. As you pass reed beds, small islands and deep waters, the music of frogs can be a constant companion, especially later in the day, as the choir sparks up as the sun goes down. The light show of the Gippsland sunsets can be spectacular as they are amplified and reflected in the water.
There is also a bird hide at the eastern end of the boardwalk. Take a bird guidebook with you. You’ll be surprised what you might tick off. Migratory birds arrive here too. You may just see something that’s flown thousands of miles, just for you.
