Your Middle of Everywhere app will have just alerted you to this jaunty railway signal box, and gates, on busy Reeve Street, across the way from a supermarket, with no sign of a railway track. Erected in 1878, two years after the railway came to Sale, The Signal Box has seen little change since it was first built except for slight alterations to accommodate changes in technology and rail operations.
Originally the end of the line, the station was located near the intersection of Cunningham and Raymond Streets. Once the line was extended to Bairnsdale, trains had to shunt back out of the town to continue on their journey.
In 1984, the station was relocated to its present site in Pettit Drive and the original station site was redeveloped as Gippsland Centre - Sale. The Signal Box and railway gates were retained in-situ as a reminder of the original railway line and station. Get the kids up on the stairs and have them shout ‘All aboard!”. People will stare.
