Congratulations - you’re in Dargo - so you’ve already had an adventure. The winding road up into
the beginnings of the wild country is an exercise in concentration, and a spectacle in itself. Your
drive could have been on a day, as can often be in the changeable weathers of the high country,
like the day these photos were taken. A soft light filled journey in misty rain, in autumn, the
oranges and reds still jumping out at you while in the distance the mountains fade away in blues
and lilacs.

A drive worth doing with an end at the mighty Dargo pub. A generous, hearty meal, a warm fire,
mountain folk and their dogs. There’s free camping right behind the pub too. Just ask while you’re
there.

Beyond the town lie the tracks for the serious off-roaders, the walkers, and the fishers. There are
wild rivers, hidden valleys, the stories that accompany them, and even the odd stand of decidedly
European trees in the middle of the wilderness eucalypts - the last vestiges of long-gone
homesteads - silent reminders of whatever old country that early settler came from.

Right outside the pub are information boards with local and area maps, plus the sort of information you didn’t know you needed - until you saw it. Dargo is Victoria’s most remote town. It has that hard-to-get-to vibe, but there is a warmth in its isolation. It feels, and is, a welcoming place, even in the rain.
