The entrance spaces to the Sale Botanic Gardens are invitations to explore. A stop at the Little McMillan Playspace can so often lead to a wandering meander around Lake Guthridge, on to Lake Guyatt, and its bird bedecked island.

Lake Guthridge itself stretches east from the playspace to the Gardens, its name coming from Nehemiah Guthridge, a visionary councillor of early Sale who was one of the key drivers of the establishment of the Gardens over 150 years ago.

Immediately to its south is Lake Guyatt, a relatively new addition to the Gardens complex, being completed in 1999, and opened in 2000. With its own playground, and even a maze, a walk around the Lake leads to the welcoming entrance to the delightful Sale Powder Magazine. An odd way to describe a place once used to store explosives, but the Powder Magazine has a restfulness worth the time to visit.

If you have the time, extend the lap into The Gardens themselves, one of the oldest in Victoria, with an engrossing collection reflecting all of that time and history.
