Nestled in the rugged foothills of Gippsland’s High Country, the Dargo Heritage Museum serves as a rustic, time-capsule destination that preserves the grit and resilience of Victoria's early pioneer days. Located on the Bairnsdale-Dargo Road on Gunaikurnai country, this community-run museum offers a beautifully unpolished, authentic glimpse into the mid-19th-century gold rush era, when Dargo boomed as a critical supply hub for nearby diggings like Grant and Talbotville.
Inside and around its grounds—which feature a replica prospector’s hut—visitors can explore a rich array of local artifacts, heavy mining machinery, and historical photographs. Crucially, the exhibits pay homage to the legendary mountain cattlemen and early agricultural settlers who braved the isolated terrain to cultivate the region's famous century-old walnut groves.
Operated by passionate local caretakers and typically open by appointment, the museum captures the true spirit of high-country survival, making it an essential stop for history buffs and 4WD travelers looking to connect with the raw, living history of the Australian alpine wilderness.

By Appointment Only.
