Maffra

Just north of Sale, Maffra is full of old-world charm and has a great sense of community spirit. A town steeped in history and agriculture, Maffra is a major service centre for the surrounding farming district known for its dairy, agricultural, pastoral, irrigation and vegetable industries.

Maffra was originally surveyed back in 1863, and was named after Maffra in NSW, which was in turn named after the Portuguese town of Mafra. The war (1808-14) more likely produced migrants to the earlier NSW settlement who moved into Victoria as it was opened up.

Enjoy a scenic drive along Maffra's tree-lined 19th-century main street and stay a while to explore a town steeped in history. Stretch your legs, browse through the many beautiful heritage shop fronts and don't forget to pick up a few famous local cheeses for lunch.

The old Nestle building houses the Gippsland Vehicle Collection, a quirky exhibition of vintage cars and memorabilia for the motoring enthusiast.

Stop by the Macalister River Park for a riverside stroll, a BBQ picnic or burn off the kids' energy with some time at the adventure playground.
