The Gippsland Vehicle Collection, situated at 1A Sale Road in Maffra, is a premier destination for motoring enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Housed within "The Maffra Shed"—a massive, 2,200-square-metre open-trussed building originally constructed as a vegetable de-hydrating factory during World War II—this impressive museum features an ever-changing, rotating display of cars, motorbikes, machinery, historic carriages, and unique auto memorabilia. Because the museum updates its core themed exhibition every four months, it offers a fresh experience for returning visitors, showcasing everything from horse-drawn transport to vintage classics and modern hot rods. The facility serves as a vibrant community hub, complete with audio-visual spaces and outdoor barbecue areas often utilized by visiting car clubs, making it a perfect stopover along the adjacent Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.

Exhibition & Facility Highlights

  • Rotating Themes: Immersive feature displays switch three times a year, meaning the vehicle line-up stays incredibly dynamic.
  • Extensive Memorabilia: Beyond vehicles, the shed is packed with historic garage equipment, model cars, and nostalgic transport artifacts.
  • The Maffra Shed Structure: The building itself is a piece of local industrial heritage, offering massive spans of open, historic architecture.
  • Traveler Friendly: The grounds provide a designated dump point and allow fully self-contained travelers to camp on-site for up to 72 hours.

The Gippsland Vehicle Collection is highly accessible and designed to offer a welcoming, easy-to-navigate environment for visitors of all physical abilities. The expansive layout of the historic wartime factory works beautifully to support mobility needs:

Wheelchair & Mobility Access - The museum is entirely flat and single-level, featuring wide, smooth concrete avenues between vehicle displays that easily accommodate standard wheelchairs, powerchairs, and walking frames.

Step-Free Entry - There are no steps or steep inclines to navigate when moving from the main parking areas into the main exhibition floor or the outdoor gathering spaces.

Seating & Rest Areas - Given the large scale of the 2,200-square-metre shed, resting points and seating are available so visitors can comfortably pace their journey through the displays.

Amenities & Parking - Accessible parking is available close to the venue entrance, providing a short, direct path into the building for individuals with limited mobility.
