The recently extended, Tarra Trail follows the historic Great Southern Railway route through farmland with views of the Strzelecki Ranges and Wilsons Promontory. The Tarra Trail is approximately 13km and is mostly compacted gravel tracks, making it an easy ride for all abilities.

The trail itself is an easy to ride or walk trail which is perfect for young children, the Tarra Trail is also close to seaside Port Albert for a post-ride meal. The trail connects with other local pathways making it possible to start or finish the trail from many locations in either town.

In Yarram, the trail follows the old railway line before passing by the Yarram Wetlands and out of town where you'll take in views of the surrounding dairy farmlands. The Tarra Trail brings you through the small town of Alberton, with the Victoria Hotel well worth a stop for a bite to eat, or a cold drink to get you hydrated.

The trail then continues onto the historic seaside village of Port Albert, with a history steeped in whaling, oil and gas exploration and much more. To finish off your walk, grab some fresh fish and chips and enjoy sitting by the wharf with beautiful water views.

Trail conditions:

While some parts of the track are looking brilliant, unfortunately, large and intermittent parts of the track have suffered major setbacks due to damage from three significant storm events. Flooding, trees across the path and damage to already completed infrastructure has set the opening date of the project back.

In the meantime, the trail, Alberton to Welshpool, is still a construction zone and ask that for everyone’s safety, please stay off this section of the trail. The Yarram to Alberton, Alberton to Port Albert, Welshpool to Port Welshpool and Welshpool to Nyora sections of the GSRT are all open for you to enjoy.
