Yarram Swimming Pool

The Yarram Swimming Pool, located on Grant Street in Yarram, is a prime example of a classic regional asset transformed by modern, community-driven innovation. Operated by the Wellington Shire Council, this vibrant facility serves as a vital recreation, health, and social hub for Central Gippsland residents and visitors alike during the warmer months.

In recent years, the facility underwent a major $1 million redevelopment—the Warmer Pool for Yarram Project—funded through a partnership spanning all levels of government and a generous contribution from the local Rotary Club.

The upgrade fundamentally changed how the community interacts with the facility by introducing:

• The Barrel-Vault Structure: A striking, architectural over-pool tension membrane cover that spans both the main and toddler pools. It effectively gives the space an "indoor feel" while preserving its open-air identity.
• Climate Control Blinds & Panels: The perimeter is fitted with 32 Ziptrak® café-style blinds and 12 fixed clear PVC panels. These can be completely lowered to fully enclose the space during cold or windy weather, or rolled up to let the summer breeze in.
• Consistent Heating: High-efficiency electric heat pumps maintain the water at a comfortable 29°C, significantly reducing the community's reliance on perfect weather to enjoy a swim.

The facility is fully equipped to cater to families, lap swimmers, and visitors looking for a relaxing day out:

• 34-Metre Main Pool: Ideal for fitness, lap swimming, and aqua aerobics.
• 16-Metre Toddler Pool: A half-circle dedicated space under the main canopy for young children to splash safely.
• Accessibility Features: The pool includes a dedicated hoist to assist mobility-impaired swimmers into the water, alongside a family change space and accessible change rooms.
• Grounds & Amenities: Lush spaces feature shade structures, communal BBQs, and an on-site kiosk providing refreshments, ice creams, and snacks.

Thanks to the covered, heated design and consistent advocacy from the community and the Yarram Pool User Group Committee, the facility operates on an extended 19-week summer schedule (typically running from late November through to early April).

The upgraded climate control has allowed the council to offer expanded, diversified scheduling that was previously impossible in a standard outdoor pool:

• Early Morning Laps: Dedicated lap swimming from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM on weekday mornings, guaranteed regardless of the outside temperature.
• Gentle Exercise & Aqua Aerobics: Structured morning and afternoon sessions tailored for all abilities.
• Water Education: Local school groups and VICSWIM programs utilize the stable, heated environment for essential water safety and swim lessons, eliminating the need for students to travel out of town.
• Free Swim Fridays: A popular community initiative providing free entry to all visitors every Friday throughout the summer season.
